What to Expect in Your First Pilates Class

Walking into any new fitness class can be intimidating, but knowing what to expect can help calm those first-day jitters. Here’s your complete guide to your first pilates experience at RUMI Pilates.

Before Class

Arrive Early Plan to arrive 10-15 minutes before class starts. This gives you time to check in, store your belongings, use the restroom, and settle onto your mat or reformer without feeling rushed.

What to Bring

  • Water bottle (staying hydrated is essential, especially for hot pilates)
  • Small towel
  • Grip socks (optional but helpful—we also sell them at the studio)
  • An open mind!

Let Your Instructor Know Tell your instructor that you’re new and mention any injuries or physical limitations. They’ll offer modifications and keep an eye on your form throughout class.

During Class

The Warm-Up (5-10 minutes) Class begins with breathing exercises and gentle movements to warm up your spine and activate your core. This is your chance to transition from the outside world and focus inward.

The Main Workout (35-45 minutes) You’ll move through a series of exercises targeting different muscle groups. In a reformer class, you’ll learn the basic movements of the machine. In mat class, you’ll use your body weight and sometimes props like resistance bands or small balls.

Don’t worry if you can’t do everything. Every exercise has modifications, and it’s completely normal to need them. Focus on quality over quantity—doing fewer reps with proper form is more beneficial than struggling through incorrect movements.

The Cool-Down (5-10 minutes) Class ends with stretching and relaxation. This is where you’ll really feel the work you’ve done and begin to notice increased flexibility.

Common Beginner Questions

“What if I can’t keep up?” Pilates isn’t a race. Move at your own pace and take breaks when needed. As you build strength and familiarity with the movements, you’ll naturally progress.

“Will I be sore?” Some muscle soreness is normal, especially in your core and muscles you don’t typically use. This usually peaks 24-48 hours after class and subsides within a few days.

“How often should I practice?” For beginners, we recommend 2-3 classes per week. This frequency allows your body to recover while building consistent progress.

After Class

Take a moment to thank your instructor and ask any questions. Hydrate, stretch if needed, and notice how you feel. Many people report feeling taller, more relaxed, and energized after their first class.
