Find answers to commonly asked questions about Rumi Pilates
Rumi Pilates is a small-group pilates studio in Los Angeles. We teach reformer, mat, and Half & Half (mat + reformer in one session) — built around a proprietary sequencing called the Rumi Method that gets taught the same way, every time, until the body learns it.
Our flagship is open in Calabasas; a second studio opens in Burbank later this year.
Three options:
First time? Take a look at our intro offers — the easiest way to try the studio.
No prior pilates experience required — and no dance, yoga, or fitness background either. Every class is built to be approachable on your first visit.
We offer a dedicated beginner class in each format:
Any of these is a good place to start. The one combination to watch: if you want to book a regular Half & Half class but haven't been on a reformer before, take Pilates Beginner Basic (Reformer) first so the equipment doesn't have to be taught on the fly.
Tell the front desk it's your first time when you arrive. We'll set you up, and your instructor will guide modifications throughout so the work fits your body.
Arrive 10–15 minutes early so we can show you the space, set up your reformer or mat, and answer any questions before the class begins.
Wear fitted athletic clothing you can move freely in, bring a water bottle, and socks — grip socks are required for reformer and Half & Half classes and recommended on the mat (sold at the front desk if you forgot). Bare feet aren't permitted in class. The instructor will know you're new and will walk you through any equipment basics during the warmup, then cue modifications throughout the class so the work matches your body — not the other way around.
Most first-timers leave feeling pleasantly worked, not destroyed. The Rumi Method is built on repetition, not exhaustion.
Infrared Heated Mat Pilates combines classical mat pilates with infrared heat panels mounted in the studio. The heat warms your body directly (rather than the air around you), which helps loosen muscles faster, encourages a deeper sweat, and supports recovery.
The result is a class that feels meditative and detoxifying — the same precise pilates work, with a sauna-like warmth that opens the body up.
Heads up: heated classes are not yet on our active schedule — they launch with our Burbank studio later this year. Until then, all current classes at Calabasas are non-heated.
The studio is heated to 95–105°F and may at times reach temperatures in excess of 100°F. If you have any medical conditions, heart issues, blood pressure concerns, or are pregnant, please consult your physician before attending.
Yes — it's rated Beginner Friendly and great for all levels. The heat helps muscles warm up faster, which can actually make movements feel more accessible. We strongly recommend consulting a licensed physician before your first class if you have any health concerns.
Lightweight, fitted athletic wear that wicks sweat. Think a sports bra plus shorts or leggings, or a fitted tank — fabrics that move with you and don't trap heat.
Avoid loose t-shirts (they tend to fall over your face in inversions and hold sweat), heavy fabrics, or anything restrictive at the waist. Socks are required — bare feet aren't permitted; grip socks are recommended but optional on the mat (see above).
Bring an extra layer for after class — your body cools down quickly once you step out.
The essentials:
We provide the mat, all small props (resistance bands, magic circles, weights), and the heat. Just bring yourself.
You need socks — bare feet aren't permitted on the mat, for hygiene and safety. Grip socks are recommended but not required for mat classes; any clean socks are fine. (Grip socks do keep you more stable in standing work and help protect the studio floors.)
If you'd like a pair, we sell grip socks at the front desk for $25. Any grip sock brand you already own works too — they don't need to be ours.
Everything except socks and water:
Bring socks (grip socks recommended but optional on the mat), a water bottle, and a sweat towel for heated classes.
Mat classes have a maximum capacity of 20 participants, ensuring individual attention while maintaining the energy of a group environment.
45 minutes.
Reformer Pilates is a precision-based, equipment-driven workout performed on a Balanced Body Reformer — a spring-loaded carriage machine. In our Semi-Private Reformer classes, you'll work in a small group of 6–8 participants, performing exercises lying down, sitting, kneeling, and standing on the machine to target every muscle group.
Bare feet are not permitted in any class.
Reformer & Half & Half: grip socks are required — they keep you stable on the equipment and are a hygiene baseline since the reformers are shared.
Anyone who arrives without the required footwear may be denied access to the class. If you forget, we sell grip socks at the front desk for $25 — any grip sock brand you already own is fine too.
Grippy socks are required. We also recommend:
• Water bottle
• Towel
• Form-fitting workout clothing
A maximum of 6 participants per class, keeping it truly semi-private with personalized instructor attention throughout.
45 minutes.
We use Balanced Body Reformer machines — industry-leading equipment known for their precision, smooth spring resistance, and durability.
Yes — our Reformer Pilates studio is at room temperature. The heated infrared environment is reserved for mat pilates classes.

• Late cancellation penalty fee: $10
• No-show penalty fee: $15
• Fail to check in upon arrival penalty fee: $10
